M20 - The Trifid Nebula

Trifid Nebula

M20, the Trifid Nebula, gets its name from the three dark veins that traverse the main body of the nebula. Its diameter is approximately 30 light years. This is an emmision nebula, meaning that the gas is heated enought to emit its own light. Also visible is the blue, reflection nebula. As the name suggests, reflection nebulae are seen only because they reflect the light of nearby stars.
