M 36 (NGC 1960), also known as the Pinwheel Cluster, is an open star cluster in the constellation of Auriga, the Charioteer. It was discovered by Giovanni Batista Hodierna before 1654 and was independently re-discovered by Guillaume Le Gentil in 1749. Charles Messier observed it in 1764 and added it to his catalogue. It lies 4,100 light years away and spans 14 ligth years. It is relatively faint but can be observed with binoculars.
